Chapter 6: Scare
Gu Huan fled without a backward glance. Liu, upon hearing Gu Yunyao's story, paled. She glared at Song and Gu Yunyao, then chased Gu Huan out of the house.
What Gu Yunyao didn't know was that the lake she had just crossed into was a bit deep, and a maid and servant had drowned there years earlier. Old Master Gu, believing it unlucky, had long wanted to fill it up, but he'd forgotten about it due to all the other things he'd been busy with.
Now, Gu Yunyao had hit upon something unexpected; her story confirmed the legend of the lake's water ghosts. She was unfamiliar with the story, having traveled through time, but Gu Huan had heard it all since childhood. Furthermore, he had already felt a sense of guilt from pushing Gu Yunyao down that day, and after being frightened by Gu Yunyao, two of his three souls had been frightened out of him.
He turned and ran, sprinting through the cold wind all the way back to Qingxi Pavilion, where the second house was located. Whether it was the fear or the chill, he didn't know if it was the cold wind that had blown him back to the main house, but that night he developed a fever and began to talk nonsense. Gu Yunyao, of course, was unaware of this. She only lamented that Gu Huan, despite his apparent bulk, was a weakling. She had already prepared five or six methods to deal with the mother and son, but to her surprise, none of them worked.
Song, frightened as well, looked worried: "Yaoyao must have encountered something unclean. Don't be afraid, mother is here."
